Ebay doesnt care which photo suite you use it just sucks up the picture you tell it to at whatever resolution it is as long as ebay can handle it it will put it on listing page.
It then depends on peoples browsers and screen settings and eyesight as to how it displays to them.
Save your money and just use a standard digital camera of good quality preferably with optical zoom in this case and take good pics as ebay is not yet HD or 3D and you cant edit out all the bad parts of a bad pic and who wants to spend time doing it anyway.
Self hosting is a good way to show pics but always upload the free 1 pic into gallery space in case pic site goes down.
There are many many free programs on the net just as good as paid for ones. Paint just to start with
