Hi,

I just wanted to warn all those who send unrecorded,

I have just refunded a seller in total for a costume jewerlley set.

Some light fingered person has taken it out of the jiffey envelope and stuck it back down. Unfortunately I was qouted more to send recorded that what it was worth.

Thanks

Then your jiffy wasn't tamper-proof.

Tamper-proof jiffy bags have strong glue and can only be opened by pulling the red tagged strip - rather like opening a packet of biscuits.  This not only protects against the light-fingered but also from accidental opening during the mail handling process.

It wouldn't have made any difference if you sent it recorded. Recorded is delivered with the ordinary post and doesn't have any extra insurance. Jewellery is not covered for theft.

For a secure service for valuables you need to use special delivery. The problem for sellers of costume jewellery, cheap china and glass etc. is that you end up sending it at your own risk because the cost of insurance is often more than the item is worth.

I don't know how you're supposed to make jiffy bags 'tamper proof'!

The jiffey back used came with a peel strip and self glued down. it has been undone and the flap  selotaped back.

Next time I will look for the tamper proof as you suggest, did not know these exsisted thanks.

Ah, so that's tamper proof! Actually I don't see how it stops the bag from being opened - if anything, it makes it easier! It may make it more obvious that it's been tampered with but if it's taped over to reseal it most people would just assume that it was being re-cycled.

I agree sonic boom,

First I did not know these bags exsised, infact my jiffey bag was bought at the PO. I Just don't get it, how, if they are anymore secure, my buyer has told me in this case the bag has been opened and re- selotaped back.

You should really take this up with the PO as tampering with the post is a serious offence. It would really make no difference if item was sent recorded......it could still have happened.

If you have POP you could also try making a claim. Although there is no insurance for jewellery unless sent by special delivery I am sure in thinking that this refers to fine jewellery. I received compensation for a set of earrings as they were costume jewellery....£20 ish. It is worth pursuing ..... be prepared for it to take a while though.
