Selling to a Nigerian buyer....
Jun 29, 2012 12:33 PM

Hello all...

I'm new to this, and have just posted on here and Gumtree my Powerbook, which simply needs a new battery.

It immediately received a response from someone who wants it posting to a 'cousin', in Nigeria.

Alarm bells of course...

I've read a handful of article about these scams, fake PayPal accounts/emails etc, resulting in sellers losing their item and money they've paid for postage/courier.

Thing is, this buyer wants to put the payment, including postage, directly into my bank account.

Obviously I can call my bank and they will tell me whether the payment has been made or not, unlike these situations where fake PayPal emails have been sent.

Anyone else had this experience and it's worked, or not??

Thanks :)

I thought so Julie - thanks :)

The 'buyer' has been fine with the bank transfer though, which totally puzzled me.

Anyway, as you said, IGNORE!!!

Hiya,

Alarm bells......Definitely DO NOT sell to this Nigerian person, add to him to your blocked bidders list, and as someone has previously stated, you are breaking ebay rules by listing on ebay AND elsewhere. You could possibly end up with 1 item and 2 buyers. You will need to either end your listing on ebay, or if you have a buyer from gumtree tell them item has already sold.  :)

I got scammed by a malasyian buyer 2 years ago and it wasnt a good experience.

Dont bother selling to this guy, its too risky and regarding your bank account that seems dodgy.

As you have 0 feedback you are a target as you may have low experience. So only accept bidders from the UK as it is safer than Nigeria.

Banks will accept a bank transfer but do not know if they will be honoured until a couple of weeks later. That is were the scam comes in. The transfer is not honoured the bank charges you for it and in the meantime the item is in Nigeria with the scammer.

Nigeria laptops always a scam

the scam has been running in one version or another  about 30 years and however you are paid there is always a catch an the seller loses

read the redalligator page you have been given above and report your buyer
